Hue, Value & Chroma: Understanding the Munsell Colour System in Colour Analysis

When we talk about colour analysis, you’ll often hear terms such as hue, value and chroma. But these aren’t simply terms created by the colour analysis industry. They come from a much broader and more systematic way of understanding colour.
In the early 20th century, American artist and educator Albert H. Munsell developed the Munsell Colour System as a way of describing and organising colour according to three separate dimensions:
Hue — what colour is it?
Value — how light or dark is it?
Chroma — how strong or muted is it?
This was significant because colour could now be considered in three dimensions, rather than simply as colours positioned around a flat colour wheel.
And these same three dimensions are incredibly useful when understanding seasonal colour analysis.
What is the Munsell Colour System?
Albert Munsell wanted a more logical and consistent way to describe colour.
Think about how we normally describe colours: navy, sage, coral, burgundy, aqua, teal, dusty pink.
These names are useful in everyday life, but they're also subjective. One retailer's “sage” might look completely different from another's. Even something described as “navy” could be warm, cool, bright, muted, medium-dark or almost black.
Munsell's approach went beyond colour names by looking at the actual properties of a colour.
Rather than asking only what colour is it?, we can ask:
Where does its hue sit? What is its value? How much chroma does it have?
This gives us a much more precise way to understand colour—and it also explains why colour analysis is about much more than finding out whether you “look good in blue.”

HUE — What colour is it?
Hue refers to the colour family.
Within the Munsell system, the principal hues are organised around a circular structure and include Red, Yellow, Green, Blue and Purple, with intermediate hues between them such as Yellow-Red, Green-Yellow, Blue-Green, Purple-Blue and Red-Purple.
Hue is particularly relevant to colour analysis because colours don't exist as one fixed version.
Take red.
A red can move towards yellow and orange, creating warmer reds such as tomato, poppy and coral-red.
Or it can move towards blue and purple, creating cooler reds such as raspberry, cranberry, ruby and blue-red.
The same thing happens with every colour family.
A green may lean towards yellow and become warmer, or towards blue and become cooler.
A blue may contain more green and become aqua, turquoise or marine, while another blue may move towards violet.
This is one of the reasons simply saying “green suits me” or “I can't wear blue” doesn't necessarily tell us very much.
The more useful question is:
Which green? Which blue? Which red?

VALUE — How light or dark is the colour?
The second Munsell dimension is value.
Value describes how light or dark a colour appears.
In the three-dimensional Munsell model, value runs vertically through the centre. Black sits at the lowest end, white at the highest, with progressively lighter values as we move upward.
Every hue can exist across different value levels.
Think about blue:
Powder blue → medium blue → navy → extremely deep navy
They're all blue, but visually they create very different effects because their values are different.
This becomes extremely important during colour analysis.
Some complexions come alive beside lighter colours but become overwhelmed as colours become progressively darker. Others need considerably more depth before the face appears defined and balanced.
We aren't deciding whether someone can technically wear a dark colour. We're observing what happens to the complexion as we change the value.
Does the face remain the focus?
Do shadows become stronger?
Does the complexion look heavier?
Do the eyes become more defined?
Does the skin appear clearer?
Does the colour overwhelm the person?
These comparative changes help us determine the range of values that creates the greatest harmony.
Bright does not mean light
This is an important distinction.
People often use bright and light interchangeably, but they describe different properties of colour.
A colour can be:
Light and bright
Light and muted
Deep and bright
Deep and muted
A highly saturated royal blue, for example, can have considerable depth while still possessing strong chroma.
This is why separating value from chroma is so important.
One tells us how light or dark the colour is.
The other tells us how strong or muted it is.

CHROMA — How strong is the colour?
The third Munsell dimension is chroma.
Chroma describes the strength or saturation of a colour—how far it sits from neutrality.
Imagine the central vertical axis of the Munsell model as a scale of neutral greys.
As colour moves outward from this neutral centre, its chroma increases.
Closer to the centre, colours become softer, greyer and more muted.
Further outward, they become increasingly colourful, vivid and saturated.
For example:
Soft sage → grass green → vivid Kelly green
Or:
Dusty rose → raspberry → intense fuchsia
These colours may be related by hue, but their chroma levels are very different.
And this difference can have an enormous effect against the skin.
Someone who requires higher chroma may appear clearer, healthier and more defined beside saturated colour. When we soften that colour too much, their complexion may begin to look flat, dull or grey.
Someone who requires lower chroma may experience the opposite. Highly saturated colour can become visually dominant, while a more softened version allows their natural colouring to come forward.
Neither is better.
We're simply looking for harmony.

Why Munsell is represented in 3D
This is where the Munsell system becomes particularly interesting.
A traditional colour wheel primarily shows us changes in hue.
But colour doesn't exist in only one dimension.
Munsell's colour space can be visualised three-dimensionally:
Hue travels around the centre.
Value travels vertically from dark to light.
Chroma travels outward from neutral towards increasingly saturated colour.
Imagine standing in the centre of a three-dimensional colour structure.
Moving around it changes the hue.
Moving upward or downward changes the value.
Moving inward or outward changes the chroma.
This is a useful way of visualising what we are doing during colour analysis. We aren't simply moving from one colour to another. We are continually adjusting different dimensions of colour and observing the effect.
What does this have to do with seasonal colour analysis?
A great deal.
Seasonal colour analysis gives us an accessible framework for grouping colours with related characteristics.
But underneath labels such as Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter are colour dimensions.
For example, two people might both look wonderful in green.
One might need a clear, warm, medium-value Kelly or apple green.
Another might need a cooler, softer, lower-chroma blue-green.
Another may require a deep, rich forest green.
And another may come alive in a highly saturated, cool emerald.
They're all wearing green.
But they're not wearing the same version of green.
That distinction is at the heart of good colour analysis.

Temperature is only part of the story
People often approach colour analysis believing the main objective is to determine whether they are warm or cool.
Temperature is important, but it's only one piece of the puzzle.
Imagine someone whose skin responds beautifully to warmth.
That doesn't mean every warm colour will be equally flattering.
A warm colour might still be:
too light, too dark, too muted, or too saturated.
Likewise, identifying someone as cool doesn't tell us whether they need a soft powder blue, medium denim blue, brilliant cobalt or deep sapphire.
This is why an accurate analysis needs to consider the interaction between temperature, value and intensity, rather than focusing on temperature alone.
Your season is essentially a colour recipe
I like to think of a seasonal palette as a colour recipe.
We're determining the combination of colour characteristics that consistently creates harmony with your natural colouring.
Perhaps you need colours that are:
warm + medium value + highly saturated
Or:
cool + medium-light + softened
Or:
warm + deeper + rich
Or:
cool + deep + highly saturated
There are many possibilities.
And as we move into more detailed seasonal systems, we can refine these dimensions even further.
This is why two people who technically belong to the same broad home season may still have noticeably different best colours.
Why draping matters
This also explains why professional colour analysis relies so heavily on comparative draping.
We aren't simply holding up random colours and deciding whether we like them.
We're systematically changing colour properties.
What happens when we make the colour warmer?
What happens when we cool it?
What happens when we increase its depth?
What happens when we lighten it?
What happens when we increase saturation?
What happens when we soften it?
By comparing these changes directly against the skin, patterns begin to emerge.
The goal isn't to find one beautiful colour.
It's to identify the colour dimensions that repeatedly produce the healthiest and most harmonious response in the complexion.
Colour names can be misleading
Understanding Munsell also helps explain why I encourage clients not to become too attached to colour names.
Names aren't standardised.
One brand's burgundy might be a deep cool red-purple, while another brand uses the same name for something warmer and browner.
“Navy” can range from a softened blue-grey through to an intensely dark blue that is almost black.
“Olive” might be muted and earthy or considerably clearer and brighter.
Rather than relying solely on the name on the label, learning to recognise the dimensions of your palette gives you much more freedom when shopping.
Instead of thinking:
I need to find this exact green.
You begin thinking:
I need a green with this level of warmth, depth and saturation.
That's a far more useful skill.
Colour analysis is about finding your version of colour
One of the biggest misconceptions about colour analysis is that being given a seasonal palette means there are entire colour families you can or cannot wear.
In reality, there is usually a version of most colour families that sits more harmoniously within your colour dimensions.
The question isn't simply:
“Can I wear red?”
It's:
Which red?
Do you need poppy or raspberry?
Tomato or blue-red?
Watermelon or burgundy?
Clear or softened?
Light, medium or deep?
Warm or cool?
That's where understanding hue, value and chroma becomes incredibly useful.

The science underneath the seasons
Seasonal names make colour analysis approachable. They're useful shorthand for communicating groups of colours and their shared characteristics.
But the season itself isn't the end of the story.
Underneath every palette are the fundamental properties of colour.
Hue. Value. Chroma.
Munsell gave us a systematic way of separating and understanding these dimensions, and they continue to provide a valuable framework for thinking about how colours relate to one another.
Once you start looking at colour this way, you stop seeing simply red, blue, green or pink.
You start noticing:
How warm is it? How light or dark is it ?How strong or softened is it?
And that's when colour analysis becomes much more than finding your season.
It becomes an understanding of your individual relationship with colour.
